A Life Free from Violence – Primary Prevention as the Key to Eliminating Violence Against Women and Girls is a comprehensive publication by the WAVE Network that highlights the essential role of primary prevention in addressing violence against women and girls (VAWG). Recognizing that effective change requires proactive measures, this publication serves as a critical resource for organizations and individuals committed to eliminating VAWG.

Authors and WAVE Thematic Working Group

The publication is authored by Tere Iglesias Lopez, Silvia Menecali, Agata Teutsch and Irene Zeilinger, members of the WAVE Thematic Working Group on Prevention, which was established in 2022. This dedicated group comprises 15 active members from 12 countries, including Armenia, Belgium, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, and TĂĽrkiye. The members brought diverse perspectives and expertise in primary prevention, engaging in monthly discussions and sharing challenges, insights, and promising practices in their respective organizations.

Content

The publication outlines the significance of shifting focus from reactive support services to proactive measures that prevent violence before it occurs. It categorizes primary prevention activities based on their impact on individuals, communities, and societal structures. The publication also examines the current landscape of primary prevention in Europe, highlights successful initiatives from WAVE members, and offers concrete advocacy strategies to empower organizations to integrate prevention efforts into their work.

Purpose

The publication aims to empower women’s rights organizations to integrate primary prevention into their ongoing work while continuing to provide essential support for survivors. Ultimately, this resource aims to inspire collective action towards creating a world where violence against women and girls is no longer tolerated.
